Diabetes Prevention & Management
Education is the corner stone of diabetes therapy. Educating patients on diabetes management and life style modification is of paramount importance for effective diabetes management and control and for prevention of complications. If a diabetes educator is available, the patients and their families must consult him/her.
Always carry sugar! You must always keep sugar/sweet/candy within reach at all times, if you are taking medicine for diabetes. Even a slight imbalance between physical activity levels, diet and medication can lead to low sugar in the system. If you feel confused, weak, tired, listless, or if your hands begin to tremble, then it is highly probable that the sugar level in your system. has gone down. At such times you should immediately eat something sweet and subsequently eat a snack/ meal. Also, consult your doctor at the earliest.
Control blood pressure, blood cholesterol and excess body weight- avoid tobacco and moderate the intake of alcohol.
Keeping a check on your blood lipid levels, essentially on cholesterol - LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides - is extremely important in diabetes. So is keeping a tight control on blood pressure. Cholesterol levels need to be checked once a year and blood pressure needs to be checked every three months. - Optimal cholesterol levels are as follows:
HDL cholesterol should be > 45/dl (ideally should be > 50 for women and > 45 for men)
Triglyceride levels should be < 150 mg/dl(ideally should not be more than 100mg/dl)
